Dr Phyllis Ghim Lian Chew is a distinguished Singaporean linguist, educator and social activist renowned for her interdisciplinary work on language, religion, culture, and identity. A tenured professor in the Department of English Language and Literature at the National Institute of Education (NIE), Nanyang Technological University, with several Teacher of the Year awards, she retired in 2019 and is currently a Consultant at the Singapore University of Social Sciences (SUSS) . Her scholarship explores how language interacts with religious practices and cultural identity—evident in her ethnographic studies on Daoist youth literacies, Chinese religions, and Muslim education. She has held several prestigious visiting appointments, such as Leverhulme Visiting Professor at Roehampton University and Fulbright Research Professor at Harvard Divinity School, further highlighting her global scholarly impact.
 
Dr Chew is also an active scholar of the Bahá’í Faith, contributing significant works that discuss intersections between Chinese religions and Bahá’í teachings, including books like The Chinese Religion and the Bahá’í Faith (1993), Emergent Lingua Francas and World Orders (2009), and A Sociolinguistic History of Early Identities in Singapore (2012). Additionally, she authored a comprehensive history of the Singapore Council of Women, exploring social-cultural political roots of Singapore women’s history. Through her rigorous interdisciplinary research, Dr Chew bridges language, identity, and religious discourse, making her a leading voice in Southeast Asian sociolinguistics, gender, and comparative religion studies.
