The Life & Career Story Of Vincent Yong

movement artist, educator and somatic therapist

About This Episode

Vincent Yong is a Singaporean movement artist, educator and somatic therapist who has built a notable reputation both locally and internationally. Combining his engineering studies, professional dance education and performing career, Vincent is distinguished currently as Singapore’s only Certified Movement Analyst, Registered Somatic Movement Educator & Therapist (RSME/T) and Registered Somatic Dance Educator (RSDE) accredited by International Somatic Movement Education and Therapy Association (ISMETA). This makes him one of only a few in Southeast Asia with this combination of credentials. He founded Danspire International in 2009, aiming not just to create stage dance works, but to expand the role of movement into everyday life — helping people reclaim and inhabit their bodies more fully, promoting self-expression, communication, healing and empowerment.

A deeper thread in Yong’s work is somatics — the experiential, embodied awareness of movement — and its therapeutic potentials. He has used his own early experiences of physical limitation (born with a heart condition) to inform his understanding of how movement, breath, body awareness and expression interrelate. Over two decades he has developed programmes that cross disciplinary boundaries — between arts, health, education — and presented at international scientific forums such as “Movementis – Brain. Body. Cognition” a neuroscience conference at Harvard University as well as with the International Association of Dance Medicine and Science. Through his teaching, performance, therapy, writing and consulting, Yong continues to work toward helping people lead fuller embodied lives, transforming how we think about movement — not just as choreography, but as living experience.
